In a world dominated by mass-produced goods, Kamado has carved out a distinct niche by staying true to time-honored artisan techniques—proving that “handmade with precision” is not just a slogan, but the backbone of its unmatched quality. For decades, the brand has prioritized craftsmanship over speed, turning each Kamado unit into a testament to skilled labor and meticulous attention to detail. This week, we take an exclusive look at the production process that sets Kamado apart, from raw material selection to the final quality check.

Step 1: Sourcing Premium Materials—The Foundation of Quality

Every Kamado begins with a rigorous material selection phase, a step that artisans describe as “building a house on solid ground.”We handpicks high-grade ceramic clay, chosen for its durability, heat retention, and resistance to cracking—properties hat are non-negotiable for Kamado’s long-lasting performance. Unlike mass-market brands that opt for cheaper, lower-quality clay blends, Kamado’s clay is sourced from regional quarries with a decades-long track record of consistency. “We don’t just order clay—we visit the quarries, test samples, and ensure each batch meets our strict standards,”“A single flawed batch can compromise an entire production run, so we never cut corners here.”

Step 2: Hand-Shaping and Molding—Artisans at Work

Once the clay is approved, it moves to the hands of Kamado’s master artisans—many of whom have spent 10+ years perfecting their craft. Unlike automated machines that stamp out identical parts, each Kamado body is hand-shaped using traditional molds, with artisans adjusting pressure and thickness to ensure uniformity. “Machines can’t feel the clay’s texture—they can’t tell if a section is too thin or if there’s a small air bubble,” explains Carlos Mendez, a third-generation Kamado artisan. “We use our hands to sense those details. It’s slow, but it’s the only way to get the perfect shape that holds heat evenly.”

After shaping, the clay pieces are left to air-dry naturally, a process that takes 72 hours—far longer than the forced-drying methods used in mass production. “Forced drying causes the clay to shrink unevenly, leading to cracks later,” “Natural drying lets the clay settle gently, preserving its structural integrity.”

Step 3: Glazing and Firing—Precision in Every Coat
The glazing stage is another example of Kamado’s commitment to precision. Artisans apply a food-safe, heat-resistant glaze by hand, using soft brushes to ensure an even coat. Each unit receives two coats of glaze, with a 24-hour drying period between applications—again, a departure from automated spray systems that often leave thin spots or drips.

Once glazed, the Kamado units are fired in custom-built kilns at temperatures exceeding 1,200°C (2,192°F). The firing process is closely monitored by artisans, who adjust the heat incrementally over 48 hours to prevent warping. “Firing is make-or-break,” “If the temperature rises too fast, the clay can crack. We check the kiln every hour, even overnight, to make sure everything is on track.”

Step 4: Final Assembly and Quality Checks—Ensuring Unmatched Performance

The final phase of production involves assembling the Kamado’s components—including the grill grates, vents, and handles—all of which are either handcrafted or sourced from trusted suppliers that meet Kamado’s quality standards. Each assembled unit then undergoes a series of rigorous tests: heat retention tests (to ensure it maintains consistent temperatures for hours), leak tests (to check for air gaps), and durability tests (to simulate years of use).

Why Artisan Production Matters in a Mass-Market World
For Kamado, the choice to stick with artisan production isn’t just about tradition—it’s about meeting the needs of consumers who value longevity and performance over low prices. A recent customer survey found that 85% of Kamado owners cite “durability” and “consistent performance” as their top reasons for choosing the brand, with many noting that their Kamados have lasted 15+ years.
